Supporting the Ubele Initiative to co-design resources with Black and Minoritised communities experiencing menopause
Project aims:
To destigmatise menopause in Black and racially minoritised and LGBTQ+ communities, and encourage open and honest intergenerational discussions.
To create safe healthy spaces where lived experiences, knowledge, resources and information is shared so that there is understanding of the taboos, practices and support in place.
Inclusively supported Common Collective to deliver this project.
Project background
You and Menopause received some funding from Impact on Urban Health to help deepen understanding of menopausal experiences of Black and racially minoritised and LGBTQIA+ communities and create resources. We helped to co-design and create a pack of cards that supports people through the journey of menopause. This project and resources specifically focused on co-designing resources for Black and racially minoritised and LGBTQIA+ communities.
Gathering feedback and co-designing the cards:
We started the project by mapping out what impact we wanted to create and what user needs this resource would aim to meet. We then mapped out what the core areas of content might be with the You and Menopause team and from this we started to create the structure for the different types of cards we could include - affirmations, conversation starters, stories etc.
We created some high level prototypes ready to get input from potential end users and the You and Menopause team ran feedback and co-design sessions to help us understand what the best tone of voice would be, key content people would like included and thoughts around the visual design.
There were a few rounds of iterations and a couple of further co-design workshops to help refine the final cards. We worked with the super talented Amanda Morrison to help with the visual design of the cards and the illustrations are by the very talented Halcian Pierre.
The outcomes and impact:
These cards are now being used by individuals and community groups to help more people to talk about menopause and support people on their journeys.
